St. Columb's Cathedral
St. Columb's is a fine example of 'Planters Gothic'. As originally erected, it had a spire of wood covered with lead. The lead which had been taken down and stored for repairs, came in very useful for making cannon balls and bullets during the 1689 siege. The building contains many striking memorials. In the Bishops Throne is the chair used at the consecration of Bishop Bramhall in 1633. The reredos is of great beauty. The centre panels were the gift of Mrs. Robert Corscaden in memory of her sister. The handsome chapter house was also donated by Mrs. Corscaden and it contains a large number of valuable siege relics including the locks and keys for the four original city gates. The bells in the tower are also of great antiquity, having been donated by King Charles I in 1638.

St. Eugene's Cathedral
Located outside the city walls, but clearly visible from the Grand Parade wall, this magnificent building was constructed late in the history of Derry, towards the end of the 19th century. Many of the inhabitants, particularly those in power, objected to its construction due to the fact that the city had fought against the Catholic King James II in the great siege and to then have a Catholic cathedral constructed in their city did not appeal to them. The cathedral was not fully complete until in 1902 the spire was finished , so even set fairly low in a valley this cathedral towers over everything around it and is an impressive sight because of its distinction, the spire itself reaches over seventy metres.
